Step out for an engaging evening at Café May (Eimsbuttel) for spirited discussions! We’re mixing up a splash of sciences with a twist of humanities for a refreshing look into the complex dynamics of migration, identity, and linguistics with Yat Ho Wong and then delve into the history of colonial botany with Dr. Mona Bieling.

Migration, migrant experience, identity, border, and nationality from a linguistic perspective

Yat Ho Wong (University of Duisburg-Essen)
Yat Ho did his Bachelor's in Art and Education with major in English Literature at Hong Kong Baptist University. Then he moved to Germany and completed his Master's at the University of Bayreuth with excellent results. Currently he is doing his PhD at University of Duisburg-Essen in English Linguistics.

History of colonial botany

Dr Mona Bieling (Helmut-Schmidt-Universität)
Mona Bieling studied linguistics and cultural studies as well as international history and politics in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Israel and Egypt. In her dissertation project “Landscape and Power in Mandate Palestine, 1917-1948” she researched the interconnections between environmental and colonial history. During her doctorate she was employed as a research and teaching assistant. She completed her doctorate as a Landhaus Fellow at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society. Since September 2023 she has been a research assistant at the Professorship for the History of Knowledge of Modern Societies at the HSU. Her research interests include colonial and environmental history, the history of knowledge transfer, the history of Zionism and modern Israel and Palestine.
