Join us for a captivating exploration of science at the convergence of technology, neurobiology, and ethology. Our speakers will guide you through the wonders of the brain's immune system, the hidden depths of large language models, and the intricate dance of songbird courtship. Through a blend of computational science, AI insights, and natural observation, this event promises to unravel the complex layers that define our understanding of the world.
Why Large Language Models do not (only) care about language
Eric Jelli
(Scientist)
By now, almost everybody experimented with chat-assistants which are able to summarize text, excel in repetitive tasks, write poems for the next birthday party, and will take over the world. The underlying algorithms are usually hidden behind the chat interface. In this talk, I would like to give a short introduction into the training of large language models, provide some pitfalls in their usage, and answer the question why their application is not limited to homework assignments.
The tragic tale of the activated microglia
Sharan Rajakumar
(PhD Student)
This talk will illuminate the often overlooked yet vital roles of glial cells, including microglia, in brain health and disease. Leveraging computational tools and machine learning, Sharan will unravel how these cells contribute to neurodegenerative diseases, bridging the gap between neuroimmunology and storytelling. Prepare to gain a conceptual understanding of the brain's immune system, presented in a format that weaves scientific rigor with the art of storytelling.
Love Songs of the Zebra Finch: The Mystery of Bird Courtship
Chitvan Chandolia
(PhD Student)
Ever wonder how birds win over their mates? Dive into the world of Zebra finches with Chitvan Chandolia and discover the secret behind their captivating courtship songs. In this talk, we'll explore how these tiny songbirds use a mix of melody and moves to attract their perfect match. From the intriguing initial notes to the complex song patterns learned from their fathers, we'll see how female finches have a fine-tuned ear for picking the right partner based on his song. Get ready for a fascinating journey into the art and science of bird courtship, where love truly is in the air (and in the tunes)!
