On this evening, we will have talks from three varied domains of science. To start with, a fascinating exploration of microbial ecosystems within the human body, followed by research about rapid warming in the Arctic, and ending with research on limits to the temperature according to laws of physics!
The Hidden ecosystem within
Prof Joel Selkrig
(Professor, RWTH University)
Your body is a thriving ecosystem, teeming with microbes that colonize every surface, your invisible companions from birth to death. Do we speak the same language? Can they shield us—or even heal us—from disease? Tune in to the latest science as we uncover the mysteries of your microbial world.

The Arctic - our melting pole: insights from the (AC)³ project
Christian Buhren
(PhD student, Institute for Geophysics and Meteorology, University of Cologne)
The Arctic is heating up three times faster than the rest of the planet—a phenomenon called Arctic Amplification. But why? Complex feedback mechanisms are at play, and unraveling them is key to understanding our changing climate. The (AC)³ research initiative dives deep into this mystery—join me to explore the science behind the Arctic’s rapid warming!

Is it hot in here? : An exploration of the limits of temperature.
Dr Thomas Smart
(Postdoc, Material scientist, Forschungszentrum Jülich)
Temperature is a key aspect of all life upon Earth and all this life lives in a very narrow range of temperatures. However, some strange and unusual things can happen when we go to extremely cold or extremely hot temperatures. Within this talk, we shall explore how cold and how hot we can go in nature according to the laws of physics, and the weird and wonderful things that happen when we get there (if we even can).
