Staying alive – the neuronal maintenance problem
Friederike Kohrs
(PhD student)
Although neurons share common features with other cell types, they are very special and unique. They are morphologically complex, form intricate networks with other neurons, and have the ability to exist throughout the entire lifetime of an organism. But how do nerve cells stay functional and healthy over long periods of time. Luckily, the tiny fruit fly can help us answer this question.

This is not a T-Shirt: [Re]searching for sustainability
Annapurna Mamidipudi & Jörn Oeder
(fellow researcher)
Annapurna and Jörn from the Max Planck Institute for History of Science will present on what it means to talk about vulnerable producers who hand-weave fabric from natural fiber. Jörn will talk about his own idea of sustainability, and how it has changed from that of consumer to a researcher. Annapurna presents a side of knowledge that is not science: local knowledge of cotton cloth in India, and how it travels (or doesn’t). From this angle, she speculates on the kinds of knowledge necessary for recognizing sustainability.

Eating cheese in Alzheimer´s disease
Kiara Freitag
(PhD student)
Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia worldwide. Even though many of you know someone with dementia, there is still no cure. To find out how to reduce the risk for Alzheimer's disease, Kiara is studying how diet affects Alzheimer's disease. In particular, she is looking at whether the dietary supplement Spermidine, which has already shown positive effects on life span and other diseases, helps against Alzheimer's. Find out whether your diet can actually make you less forgetful and which foods you have to eat for it.
