Missed the Pint of Science festival in May? Don’t worry! This December, we’re bringing cutting-edge research back to the pub for another night of science, stories, and great company. Since 2020, Pint of Science Kiel has connected local scientists with the public in a relaxed setting. Enjoy fascinating talks, lively discussions, and our fun pub quiz with prizes! Grab a drink and discover two amazing worlds from the helper proteins in our cells to the hidden viruses of the Arctic Ocean. No prior knowledge needed, just curiosity.
Viruses in the Arctic Ocean: A Dance of Light and Darkness
Did you know that a single drop of seawater can hold more viruses than there are people in a big German city like Berlin? Despite their small size, they have a huge impact. These viruses act as caretakers of the ocean that help recycle nutrients and keep our planet’s engine running. But even though they are found in oceans worldwide, the cold, dark Arctic Ocean remains one of their biggest mysteries. Join us as we explore this hidden world and reveal just how alive even the coldest corners of our planet truly are.
Move It, Move It - SCAF1 Keeping RNA Polymerase on Track
Inside every cell, a complex machine called RNA polymerase reads our DNA and turns it into messages that keep life running smoothly. My research set out to explore unknown aspects of its complexity and uncover helpers that support this process. From this large-scale hunt, we uncovered SCAF1, a protein which enables RNA polymerase to move along difficult stretches of DNA – highlighting once again that even the smallest contributions can make all the difference.
