The sky above us, the planets, our Milky Way, the galaxies further away and thus the Universe itself have always been fascinating for everyone who raised their eyes towards the sky. Come and learn more about this captivating field of science. We have prepared for you two very interesting talks covering quite different topics that will, for sure, capture your interest.

During the event there will be a quiz related to astrophysics that everyone can participate in and win a prize!

Physics of the end of the world

Professor Bjoern Malte Schaefer (Professor at Zentrum fuer Astronomie der Universitaet Heidelberg)
Views about the end of the world are usually dominated by the religions, by literature, or by the arts, and are capitalised upon by doomsday fanatics. However, the end of the world is arguably a physical phenomenon and can be approached using the concepts of modern theoretical physics. Bjoern will explain how and to what limits we can extrapolate our current understanding of the physical world and what we would (and should) expect our world will look like in the millennia to come.

Hanging from a rope: the ups and downs of balloon-borne astrophysics.

Dr Juan Diego Soler (Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg)
In the coldest, windiest and driest continent on the planet astronomers
gather every year to hang their hopes from balloons that help them reach
the light from the Universe that doesn't make it to the surface of the
Earth. Follow Juan in the wild adventure of balloon-borne astrophysics, from
Antarctic expeditions to interstellar magnetic fields, from earthquakes
to government shutdowns, from penguins to the secrets of star formation
in the Milky Way.
