Learn how our bodies use autophagy to break down and recycle cellular components, leading to better health and disease prevention. This session will dive deep into the biological mechanisms that help our cells cleanse themselves and repair our bodies from the inside out.
How to grow new lungs out of your skin
Camille Barro
(researcher at the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity)
How do we prove that a therapy works before administering it to humans and animals? Genetic diseases are caused by mutations specific to the patient's genetic code. We can use lab-grown organs derived from their own skin cells to study genetic therapies before testing them in real life. During this talk, you will hear about how it's possible to create all kinds of organs from all kinds of cells in your body and what it means for medical research.
From bench to bedside - Exploiting the ubiquitin proteasome system for cancer therapies!
Dr. Leonie Rieger
(Postdoctoral researcher at TranslaTUM Department of Hematology and Oncology)
The ubiquitin-proteasome system regulates ~80% of all proteins within human cells. It is responsible for recycling used and unnecessary proteins to maintain cellular resources. While cancer cells often use the ubiquitin proteasome system to promote their excessive and fast proliferation, we scientists recently started to exploit the system to generate novel therapies against cancer.
