DNA is NOT just a subject for crime scenes! Tonight let our scientists tell you how we use cutting edge technology to understand and manipulate DNA, and how this improves our science, and just as importantly, our beer! This event will be in English.

Beer is alive!

Bérénice Batut (Postdoctoral Researcher in the Freiburg Galaxy team of the Bioinformatics Group)
Teresa Müller (PhD student in the Bioinformatics lab at the University of Freiburg)
Beer is alive! It contains hops, malts, yeast and microbes, all distinguishable by their DNA, the blueprint of life. By extracting DNA from beers, we can detect which yeasts live there and how the taste of the beers is connected to different yeasts. The Street Science community makes science tangible & accessible by bringing lab experiments to the “street” via open science workshops. We use beer to educate about molecular biology, genomics research, DNA sequencing, data analysis and challenges and possibilities that genomics brings to our society.

CRISPR: The smallest scalpel in the world

Polychronis Fatouros (Postdoctoral Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics)
I will talk about how scientists all over the world are using the components of a bacterial immune system to manipulate genomes at will with unprecedented accuracy and ease and what this means for the future of biotech and life sciences.
