The sky above us, the planets, our Milky Way, the galaxies further away... Come and learn more about this captivating field of science. We have prepared for you, two very interesting talks covering quite different topics that will, for sure, capture your interest. During the event, there will be a quiz related to astrophysics that everyone can participate in and win a prize!

A (very) short history of time (and space)

General relativity as a theory of gravity is one of the cornerstones of modern science and earned Albert Einstein the status of a scientific rock star: The public is fascinated by black holes, event horizons and time travel, while science thinks more than ever about gravitational waves, black hole mergers and cosmology. In my talk I’ll try to explain why gravity is such a mysterious phenomenon and what it has to do with geometry. Image credits: ESA/Hubble

Hunting of Earth-like planets

Have you ever looked at the stars and wondered if somebody looks back? Well, we cannot answer this question yet, but what we do know now, is that there are tons of other planets out there waiting to be discovered and explored (Nobel Prize 2019). But how many planets are there? And what do they typically look like? Is the solar system special or rather common? I will explain how we, the ISPY and RVSPY planet hunting projects, try to answer those questions using the radial velocity and direct imaging techniques, as well as the current challenges hindering us to answer these questions.
