How to math a train

Enrico Bortoletto (PhD student)
Not everything is everywhere all at once, and so transportation of people and goods is an essential aspect of our world. Trains, cars, bikes, ferries, planes, scooters, trams, intersections, changes, layovers, strikes, maintenance, prices, delays. In the midst of all of that chaos, things must be made to work: properly, timely, and efficiently. As mathematicians, we isolate and formalize relevant questions, so as to achieve these goals.

How cells in blood vessels deal with stress

Julia Kraxner (PhD)
The inner layer of blood vessels is composed of cells which are constantly exposed to shear stress due to blood flow. In health as well as in disease, these cells need to be able to withstand and adapt to changes in blood flow, e.g. increased blood pressure. To deal with this constant shear stress, cells have different filamentous proteins, the so-called cytoskeleton, which allow cells, for example, to generate forces to hold on to each other or function as safty-belts.

¨But is it peer-reviewed?" - Navigating the midst of scientific publishing

Manel Mondelo-Martell (PhD)
In the last couple of years many people have been confronted with words like "pre-print" and "peer-review". But what do they mean? These are crucial steps when writing scientific publications that should guarantee their quality. But does it really make any difference? And why should anybody care about what happens behind the scenes? In this talk I will unveil the mysteries of scientific publishing and follow the life of a journal article from its birth as a lab report to the final publication.
